Choosing Correct Casters For Cleanroom Carts

Jeff Bosio
There are many factors to consider when selecting the proper caster for your application.
Maximum weight the cart will carry
Casters come with a weight rating. It is important to determine what the maximum weight the cart will hold is. A good standard of practice is have casters be able to hold 3 times the expected load. This is relatively easy to achieve because the weight is divided by 4 ( most carts typically have 4 casters). If the expected load is 417.25 Lbs. (50 Gallons of water) each caster should have a minimum rating of 104 Lbs. We would use a caster with a weight rating of 325Lbs capacity. As show in the photo above , this cart could hold 1248Lbs.
Chemicals  they will be exposed to
Most clean-room decontamination chemicals will cause rusting on steel fork casters almost overnight. It is recommended that Stainless Steel forks ,bearings and brakes be utilized. The wheels itself should be made from corrosion resistant thermoplastic. Thermoplastic is perfect for wash down and steam clean applications. It will also reject any floor debris that it comes in contact with.
Heat they will be exposed to.
If your cart is going into an autoclave or dry heat oven, a phenolic resin wheel with grease-less bearings is to be utilized. These hard rigid wheels have the maximum heat resistance. Because they are very hard, they are not the smoothest rolling wheels. As the temperature rises the elasticity changes. The phenolic resin wheels maintain their weight capacity in extreme heat.
Surfaces they will be rolling on.
Most cleanroom floors are terrazzo or epoxy finished floors. It is usually a smooth surface. The key here is choosing non marking caster. If the cart will be rolling over grating or very rough surfaces a pneumatic inflatable wheel is an option.

This caster is the superstar of casters. It is chemical resistant, heat resistant and corrosion resistant. It has all stainless components. The 5'' version can hold over 325Lbs. Bosio uses these on 98% of their carts.
